Upcoming Scottish Obesity Alliance Webinars

08 November 2023

The Scottish Obesity Alliance is excited to announce two upcoming webinars!

November 28: “Adverts, Adverts, Everywhere:” Children, Junk Food Marketing, and Inequality, 12-12:40pm

"Adverts, adverts, everywhere, all the time."

This summarizes a key message that young people had for us during our research: most of them encounter marketing for unhealthy food on a daily basis.

In this webinar, Dr. Lauren Carters-White will discuss the extent and impact of unhealthy food marketing, including the unequal impact of advertising on lower-income areas.

We will also give attendees a first viewing of a short video the SOA and the University of Glasgow co-produced with young people about their experiences with food marketing, based on focus groups and workshops with them.

December 13: Navigating Regulations: Secondary Legislation in the Scottish Parliament, 12-12:40pm

As advocacy organisations, we know that strong policy to protect everyday people and create a health-supporting environment is key to the lasting, transformative change that Scotland desperately needs.

But to understand where advocacy organisations fit in the process of influencing policy, we first must understand the different ways that policy can be made in Scotland.

In this webinar, Scottish Parliament Assistant Clerk Susan Brown will discuss the less-known process of secondary legislation, which involves amendments to existing legislation by civil servants, rather than the creation of new legislation in Parliament.

Secondary legislation can be a powerful tool in helping to reshape Scotland’s health environment. For example, we are expecting that restrictions on price promotions of HFSS foods will take the form of secondary, rather than primary, legislation. By understanding how this process works, advocacy organisations will be better poised to influence health policy.
